Well Go USA has acquired all North American rights to Japanese director Kensuke Sonomura’s heavy-hitting crime thriller. bad city
A sequel to the genre director’s assassin thriller Hydra Since last year, bad city will be screened at Austin’s Fantastic Fest on Friday, followed by a competition slot in Sitges in October.
Well Go will first release the film through its martial arts exclusive streamer Hi-Yah! Hi-Yah! The original, followed by a theatrical outing and a wider VOD release later this year.
The film is set in the city of Kaiko, a place torn apart by rampant corruption and violence between a private conglomerate, the yakuza, and the authorities. But after a mafia-linked businessman runs for mayor and begins systematically eliminating his opponents, a former police captain imprisoned for murder, desperate to bring down the corrupt businessman, is released in a last-ditch effort.
Bad City stars Hitoshi Ozawa (Gauze dead or alive; shoot, my darlin’), Hideto Katsuya (Kamen Rider W, Kamen Rider Zero-One), Masanori Mimoto (Enter Hydra, Baby Assassins, Fat Dragon), Akane Sakanou (Ultraman X, your eyes will tell), Masaya Kato (Godzilla, Brother, Fighter in the Wind), Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi (Kamen Rider Kabuto, Bushido Man) and Lily Frankie (Shoplifters, Yakuza Apocalypse)
Well Go is known for its regular North American and Asia-wide edgy action titles, with semi-recent titles including Korean zombie sequel Peninsula, Hong Kong’s Better Days or Japan’s First Love from Takashi Miike.
