The fashion world lost another icon on Thursday when Vivienne Westwood, one of the original architects of punk fashion, died at the age of 81.
Westwood’s fashion brand shared the grief news of her death On social media, he writes that he is “at peace and surrounded by his family” in south London.
“Vivien continued to do what she loved until the last moment, designing, working on her art, writing her book and changing the world for the better,” read the Instagram caption. “She lived an amazing life. Her innovation and influence over the past 60 years has been immense and will continue into the future.
Shortly after the news broke, celebrities from across the spectrum — from fashion to entertainment — took to social media to pay tribute to the rule-breaking fashion designer who rose to fame in the 1970s alongside sex pistols.
Juliette Louise posted a photo of Westwood in a white button-down with the caption, “Be reasonable. Demand the impossible” and recalled a conversation the two had about music and financial sustainability. [sic] Now,” Lewis wrote. “She didn’t just challenge mainstream age and beauty standards. She did not see or acknowledge that the expression of personal beauty had anything to do with relevance and necessity.
Jeremy O. Harris praised Westwood for challenging people as “an extension of our politics” and thanked him for teaching us “so much while making us beautiful.”
