The Berlin International Film Festival has unveiled the first films selected to run at the 2023 edition in its Panorama and Generation sidebars.
The line-ups include films featuring Willem Dafoe, Alicia Silverstone and more white lotus Star Sidney Sweeney and a wide geographic range, with features from Ukraine, Yemen and Iran, among others.
Ira Sachs’ PassengersThe Paris-set drama, starring Ben Whishaw, Adele Exarchopoulos and German actor Franz Rogowski, has its European premiere at Berlin’s Panorama, but is directed by Jennifer Reeder. the criminalDescribed as a “bloody coming-of-age story” and featuring Silverstone, Christopher Lowell and Kia McKiernan, it will have its world premiere bow in Berlin.
A frequent Berlinale attendee, Dafoe returns to the chilly German capital inside From Greek director Vassilis Katsoupis, he plays an art thief who gets trapped in the New York slums in the middle of a job.
On the documentary side, a Ukrainian film Butterflies of iron From director Roman Liuby, which has its European premiere at Panorama, it’s sure to draw interest. The film looks at the downing of Malaysian passenger jet MH17 over eastern Ukraine in 2014 by Russian-backed Ukrainian separatists. It promises to “expose Russia’s war mechanisms.”
One of the US titles heading to Berlin realityFilmmaker’s directorial debut white lotus And Euphoria Sweeney stars as Reality Winner, an NSA whistleblower who received a five-year prison sentence for leaking an intelligence report on Russian interference in the 2016 US elections.
In the Generation category for youth and children’s films, the 2023 world premieres include Mexican-U.S. co-productions Adolfo by director Sofia Ouza; Feature by Jove Zi Wei Tomorrow is a long timeand a Belgian-Dutch film Sea lightning By Domion Huyghe.
Twilight And Clouds of Sils Maria Star Kristen Stewart will head the jury for the 2023 Berlinale competition, which judges films in Berlin’s main section. The 73rd Berlin International Film Festival will also feature a tribute to director Steven Spielberg, who will receive an honorary Golden Bear for his life’s work.
The 73rd Berlinale will be held from February 16-26, 2023.
