10 possible opponents for John Cena at WrestleMania 39

Recent reports claim that John Cena is set to appear at WWE WrestleMania 39 in a bid to become the “next Rock”.

2022 will be the first year since Cena’s debut in 2002 that he has not competed in a match for WWE, but that will change in 2023.

With WrestleMania underway in Hollywood, it seems clear that the aspiring movie megastar wants to stage one of the biggest events in sports and entertainment. Throw in the fact that he’s one of the greatest superstars in WWE history and it’s a perfect match.

It is not yet confirmed if Cena will be in wrestling but his love for the industry and respect for the fans can be seen. Whoever Cena faces will get a serious rub as this is one of the marquee matches on the card.

Roman Reigns and The Rock seem on an Undisputed WWE Universal Title collision course, but Cena has already faced Bray Wyatt twice at Mania and it doesn’t feel special. Brock Lesnar and Cena have been done enough times.

Austin Thierry’s push stalling seems to have put paid to any hopes of facing the 16-time champion. Any possible CM Punk WWE return seems fraught with complications, so we’ll leave him off the list for now.

So who can he face? GiveMeSport Takes you through 10 potential opponents for John Cena at WrestleMania 39…

10. Logan Paul

Logan has dazzled everyone with his performances thus far in his three-match WWE career, most recently putting on a classic with Roman Reigns in the Crown Jewel. If his knee injuries aren’t as bad as he first feared, a Hollywood clash between two big stars from different worlds doesn’t seem like a bad idea.

9. Edge

Edge is arguably Cena’s greatest rival as he has stood out in recent WWE rivalry streaks. With this in mind, and the crazy fact that they’ve never competed in a singles WrestleMania match, who would say no to one last match between the two icons? This may be the last chance to do so.

8. Randy Orton

For Edge, see Orton. The only person who could have had a bigger or better rivalry with Cena, and his only encounter with him, came in a triple threat match at ‘Mania. Orton will hopefully return soon and likely become a heel, will his focus turn to Cena after he finishes the Riddle?

7. Gunther

There’s been some chatter online lately about a ‘Mania showdown’ with Gunther Cena, something the big Austrian has said. The Intercontinental Title was missing from Cena’s collection. He is the ultimate babyface, Gunther is a monstrous heel. It sets itself.

6. Bobby Lashley

In Lashley’s final WWE PPV match before his first exit, he lost to Cena in a WWE Title match at Great American Bash 2007. This remains the only time the two have met. Lashley claims that Cena felt threatened by him and forced his departure all those years ago? And there’s your story.

5. Sami Zain

Sami is in a career at this point and is probably the WWE’s MVP on a week-to-week basis. He deserves a mega match at ‘Mania, whether it’s a tag match with Kevin Owens against The Usos or a match with Cena. They faced each other in Zayn’s first main roster match in 2015.

4. Seth “Freakin'” Rollins

Cena and Seth shared a long history over the WWE and US titles in 2015, culminating in a title vs. title match at SummerSlam. With Rollins now the US Champion, could he and Cena resume their feud? Rollins is also similar to Sami who had his WrestleMania moment this year.

3. Drew McIntyre

Despite being on the main roster together from 2009 to 2014, Drew and John never wrestled each other. The big Scot wants to fix that in a recent interview on WWE’s “The Bump.” This is one of the few big first-time matches left for Cena.

2. Cody Rhodes

They collide in the ring, but it seems like a lifetime ago, Cody was a young rookie and not the “American Nightmare” of today. Cody’s AEW history, where he got Cena-like split reactions and everything else makes the potential promos mouth-watering.

Cody will be pushed harder after returning from injury and will have a big ‘Mania match – if not for the big titles, who better than Cena?

1. Stone Cold Steve Austin

All the dream matches on this list are dream matches and probably anywhere in WWE. It seemed unlikely for 20 years, but with Stone Cold returning to the ring at last year’s event to face Kevin Owens, there might be a chance.

There is a huge level of respect and admiration between the pair, and absolute magic is created. A Night 1 title from Cena vs Stone Cold; Reigns vs. The Rock to headline A Night 2? please
